January Gift

Some gifts come right when you expect them. There's really not much of a surprise, except what you find when you untie the ribbon. Then there are the gifts like the one that came this week. This Christmas Cactus has been around for as long as I can remember. She basked in the glow of my mom's love and affection for many years, and even survived my neglect for that year or so when my visits to her empty house were few and far between. She enjoys the somewhat sheltered outdoors from spring to fall and then winters inside. This summer she moved from the cracked old pot that held her rootbound soul to a shiny new one with room to grow. The downside, I was told, was that she would not bloom until she grew into her new pot.

That is why I was so surprised to see this beautiful bloom. If you look closely, you can see it hanging from the bottom on the right.
Granted, there are usually many more flowers this time of year. But this one beautiful bloom came at just the right time to lift my spirits.

A closer look this morning found two more tiny little buds. Who knows what this January gift will bring in February!

Sometimes one blossom is more precious than a whole garden. I too have a plant inherited from my mother that has experienced many revivals. Your cactus blossom is beautiful and a rare treat on this cold January day.

Beautiful bloom....soon to be blooms!! My mom has a Christmas cactus that belonged to her mother. They are wonderful heirloom plants. I like your Kokopelli quilt, too!

Blossoms in the winter are nice, for sure. I have two little very green plants in the window of the chemistry lab at MHS. They both are a joy of green. The one started to grow in darkness under a lab bench. It was about 10 inches and looking for light when I took it out to get some dirt out of its pot. Pictures to follow.

I am glad I made to craft cut of five. Thanks. I am thinking about what I can do and I might have good idea.

I have a shamrock that first belonged to my mother. Of course, it has been through several generations since the original plant, but it perseveres, no matter how badly I treat it.

Oh the second I saw the picture I said to myself "oh boy, a Christmas cactus". They always make me smile. My sweet Grandma Beth always had a Christmas cactus on her old fridge. It was such a treat to wait to see it bloom every year.I wish it had been passed along to me.The blooms are really special.

I have a Christmas Cactus that was given to me as a gift. The buds are just stating to open up. It really needs to be transplanted into a larger pot, but then it won't fit on my kitchen window seal and I won't remember to wanter it and that will be the end of my cactus. Such a delimma!

Your cactus is beautiful!

Mjd, at one time I thought that the idea that a cactus would blossom was an interesting thing in and of itself. The fact that I acutally had one that did what it was supposed to do was also interesting! But this blossom is very precious; that is true.

Songbird, the print of Kokopelli on the quilt was from a set of stencils I made and Willi transferred onto the muslin while it was still in squares. We also put a border of Kokopelli around the wall in the room in the same manner. This was the first room we worked on together. We enjoy it also!

Daddy d - Got your pictures! Interesting that one of the plants started itself in the darkness and was making its way toward the light. Hmmm. Sounds like a parable to me.

Betty, I had a shamrock also, but it was not as hardy as this plant and did not make it.

Debi - it is affirming when things do what they are supposed to, isn't it? I guess I needed that affirmation right now and was not expecting it. Nice.

Susan, forgetting to water is always an issue for me but I guess I have solved that in a sense. Most of the plants I have now can go awhile without water, like a survival thing. If they couldn't make it - they are gone now.

Well all...this morning Blogger will not let me into "Back in the Day", or "Mama Said, Papa Said". If I want in, I have to switch over to the dark side - the new Blogger. I know I don't do change well, but there is not much of a choice here. So, off I go into the vast unknown. If you can't find me, please send in a search team!

"Don't worry, your blogs won't be changed in any way." I sure hope not.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a Christmas Cactus. It's pretty cool though.

First, love the single blossom with little ones soon to join. Nothing like a little sunshine in the way of flowers during the cold winter months to make a day much brighter. On another note, so far blogger has continued to let me in the old version. I am hestiant about the new version, so I will be watching your site with learning eyes.

I am a few days behind in blog world, as you can see, but what could be better than 2 gawilli posts at a time?! :-)

My Mother inherited gramms' Christmas Cactus. One thing Mother definitely has is a green thumb. The cactus has outgrown many pots and graces her kitchen with many blooms every year. Thanks for sharing yours!

I am so excited about your participation in the crafty challenge, and your new twist :-)

I started to read Maya's Granny and I got lost for a few minutes. Just when I thought my bloglines feeds were too many with 76, you go and give me another enjoyable blog to add. Your "In a Nutshell" will always be my favorite, though :-)

I don't know if you saw the pics of Buddy and the Red Ranger, but he loves it so much that we just ordered a copy from b&n. Thanks again!

I haven't gone over yet, but I suspect that my days are numbered. Not unlike when my old agency yanked WordPerfect away from me and forced me onto Word. Except that the new blogger may be an improvement, and Word still can't do things that WordPerfect did in the late '80s!
I hate forced change!

My Christmas Catus didn't bloom this last year either. I always bring it in when the weather starts getting chilly. Last year it bloomed before Christmas so this year I waited a couple of weeks later to bring it inside. It is pretty and green but no blooms. Maybe it needs repotting.
